Authorities on September 5 impounded 21 tonnes of counterfeit alcohol imported from Vietnam on National Road 2 in Phnom Den commune of Takeo province’s Kiri Vong district.

Officials from the Takeo provincial branch of the Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression (CCF) worked with police and local authorities to conduct the operation in coordination with a provincial court prosecutor.

The operation led to the seizure of 714 jerry cans of alcohol totaling 21 tonnes.

“Upon inspection, we found that the alcohol was imported illegally. Our officials seized it for further legal action,” CCF said.

Ly Serey Sambath, head of CCF’s Takeo branch, told The Post on September 6 that the owner of the alcohol had not been identified. Officials only seized the illegal product while it was being transported by two motorcycle-trailers accompanied by six people.

“According to articles 41 and 42 of the consumer protection law, alcohol containing methanol must be confiscated. But if it is ethanol, it can be used,” he said.

He said that once legal proceedings have been finalised, the alcohol will be destroyed and the owners of the motorcycle trailers fined.

“If the owners pay the fine, then we can end the case. The owners have to sign a letter promising not to repeat the offence and assist in destroying the counterfeit alcohol. Now it is being temporarily stored at the border protection unit awaiting destruction,” he said.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, authorities have confiscated large quantities of counterfeit alcohol. In a recent case in Phnom Penh, CCF officials seized more than 28 tonnes of the fake product which was on sale in Por Sen Chey district.

In the first seven months of this year, CCF has confiscated 96 tonnes of counterfeit alcohol from markets, shops, and warehouses nationwide.
