Japanese ambassador to Cambodia Masahiro Mikami expressed his appreciation of the Cambodian government’s prompt, timely and effective action to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the community.

Mikami made the remarks at the 22nd Meeting of the Cambodia-Japan Joint Committee via video conference on August 30.

According to a press release issued by the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), the meeting was attended by representatives of government institutions, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia Office, Japan External Trade Organisation, Japanese Business Association of Cambodia and representatives of Japanese companies with investment operations in Cambodia.

“Masahiro Mikami praised and highly commended Prime Minister Hun Sen for his efforts and effective response to Covid-19. Cambodia is the second country in ASEAN that has the highest vaccinated population and has effectively contained the pandemic,” the press release said.

CDC secretary-general Sok Chenda Sophea also thanked the government and people of Japan for donating medical supplies, ambulances and one million doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to Cambodia.

Ministry of Health secretary of state Youk Sambath on August 31 said the government has largely brought the pandemic under control.

“Our neighbours’ plight has not improved as they still have large outbreaks. However, Cambodia has a clear management plan and a proper and effective prevention policy. The participation of all stakeholders has made it possible for us to control the situation, even though it is not yet complete,” she said.

Sambath added that although Cambodia does not have a large-scale outbreak, people must continue to implement health preventative measures.
