The number of Ministry of Interior officials infected with Covid-19 as of August 21 is 2,198 with 1,441 recoveries and 21 deaths.

Minister Sar Kheng responded by recommending that officials continue to spread information about preventive measures, law enforcement and the Covid-19 vaccination campaign.

The minister made the recommendations on August 21 while chairing a virtual meeting on the progress in the fight against Covid-19.

“We have to continue spreading the word about implementing the ‘three dos and three don’ts’, law enforcement and pushing for Covid-19 vaccinations in accordance with the principles of the Ministry of Health,” he said.

He also advised ministry officials and all units to work together to gather information and report regularly to the health ministry.

Sar Kheng also commended the General Department of Prisons for effectively managing Covid-19 in prisons, especially in vaccinating inmates.

According to a report by Seng Youan, director-general of the ministry’s General Department of Logistics and Finance, as of August 19 the ministry had received 107,321 vaccines from the health ministry and other medical supplies.

He said the ministry had also received Covid-19 assistance provided by ministry leaders and the National Police, among others. The assistance included financial and medical items.

Separately, health ministry spokeswoman and head of the national Covid-19 vaccination committee Or Vandine reminded people not to expect Covid-19 to disappear as the virus had mutated into new strains. Therefore, people have to learn to live with it and join the government and the health ministry in implementing preventive measures.

She made the comments on August 22 while delivering Prime Minister Hun Sen’s gifts for centenarians who had volunteered to get vaccinated against Covid-19 in Svay Rieng province’s Romeas Hek district.

“I mention how Covid-19 has mutated into new variants because in the future it might mutate into something else. This indicates that Covid-19 could be with us for some time,” she said.

Vandine added that although the new variant could infect humans, the vaccine was still the most effective tool that can reduce severe illness, hospitalisations and deaths.
