Koh Tral in Cambodian sea platform

Koh Tral in Cambodian sea platform

It is true the historical Cambodian ambivalence over territorial claims on Koh Tral / Phu Quok as well as the use of such claims on political and nationalistic grounds that rest authority to those claims. However, Cambodia has the right to request a technical review of its claim over the rights on its encroached sea platform.
According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea “every State has the right to establish the breadth of its territorial sea up to a limit not exceeding 12 nautical miles” (UNCLS, art. 3)
Diagram law of the seas UN
We can determine that the base line in our case is the litoral of Kampot, Kep and Sihanouk provinces. It is not difficult to demonstrate that Koh Tral Island is right in front to the Cambodian base line. It is just 10 miles from the Cambodian coast, so it is nothing more than inside the Interior waters of Cambodia.
Vietnam argues something similar on its claim over the Spratlys islands on the South Chinese Sea, even establishing that they are nearer to Vietnam than China, Taiwan and the Philippines (see this report). At the same time, it defends that the islands have been historically Vietnamese, including its French colonial time. Koh Tral is almost attached to the Cambodian base line than the Spratlys. Reviewing the history of the Spratlys, they are actually islets in the middle of a sea that has been historically the center of several sea powers such as China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, the colonial powers of France, US, etc. On historical bases, all have the right to claim them in different proportions.
Koh Tral maps
The historical ambivalence of Cambodian population on Koh Tral does not give legal rights to Vietnam for the following reasons:
  • Vietnam has been an expansive power that historically comes from the north.
  • Cambodia is naturally the native of all this region, including the South of Vietnam (Kampuchea Kraom that translates “Low Cambodia”, like to say “Low California”.)
  • Cambodians, even during the ancestral Khmer Empire, never have been a sea power like Malaysia, Vietnam or China. It could be one of the reasons of its decline. This explains also an ancestral Cambodian indifference for the sea and why Cambodians did not show much interest in setting there. But this fact does not represent an objection to a legal claim.
Finally, one argument that should be reviewed as Koh Tral belonging to the Cambodian sea platform is Bokor Mountain. Everybody sees the Cambodian base line, but I never have seen this argument: Koh Tral is the sea continuation of the Bokor range. This natural phenomenon can be seen from any Kep beach.

Hun Sen, you got to get rid of all of your advisors because they are helping you to ruin our country and nation. These people are full of shit. They lied, cheated robbed and killed to be where they are today. Please trust them no more. Because, in the end they are going to kill you and you dynasty too. Just like they did to Laos, Chompa, Khmer Krom and now the whole Srok Khmer.and is already spreading into Thailand. But luckily Thai has woken up on time and is making sure that won't happen. So they decided to send all migrant workers to return home back to their country again.

Which is good for Khmers because Cambodia belongs to Cambodians, not VC controlling freaks. From now on, their aim of swallowing us up will be impossible. So thanks to the Thai for sending them back home to challenge the thieves of the nation VC controlling freaks. From now on let's be united Khmer Ler Khmer Kondal and Khmer Krom. We need to bring Nguyen tan dung to ICC for violating our state sovereignty. For holding all of our previous leaders as their hostages for the last 40 years also. From the reign of King Sihanouk to present days. Through cheating, lying and deceiving.

Thank you, ALBEIRO RODAS, for adding your timely writing to counter Jeff Mudrick's rambling to discredit the Khmer people from their ancestral island of Koh Tral.

it is very hard for khmer people to comprehend when we look at the map of our country that koh tral island is so close to mainland cambodia and yet, it belongs to vietnam or youn. geographically, it is attached to cambodia more than it is to vietnam. if we analyze the contenintal shelf, it is more inclined to mainland cambodia than it is to vietnam. the closest vietnamese land mass to it is hatien town compare to kampot and kep and even bokor resort in cambodia is like a stone throw away or an arm reach away from the top of phnom bokor in kampot province. i think vietnam or youn should return it to cambodia, and stop claiming it from cambodia. vietnam or youn should do the right thing by returning it to cambodia's control!

We can claim Koh Tral only when Ah Roleuy Hun Sen Ngorp.

Ah Derachharn Hun Sen is so faithful to his master Vietnam.

even the vietnamese sign something with cambodia under their invasion and occupation, it is not set in stone and cambodia can rescind it and continue to reclaim our koh tral island forever until it is returned to cambodia.

look if it is once belonged to cambodia, then the french colonial master gave it to vietnam. what make us think cambodia can't reclaim it and it be returned to cambodia? only time will tell!

the vietnamese or youn in khmer language already control the former khmer territory of the mekong river delta; however, koh tral island should be returned to cambodia, the least they can do to mend fences and ask for forgiveness from cambodia and khmer people.

koh tral island and its waters of its coast is important to cambodia to maintain our sea territory. with vietnam control koh tral island, it reduces khmer sea territories to smaller size which is unacceptable by cambodia and its khmer citizens! vietnam or youn to cambodian people is no french, no british, no american, so don't try to imitate the superpower by expansion or whatever into khmer waters and territories, etc.! khmer citizens can never allow nor accept it, period!

khmer people of cambodia will keep an eye on the conflict in the south china seas between vietnam, the philinpines and china, mostly. we will see how the vietnamese and the philipines argue with china whether their land is closers to these islands and water than china. well, how about koh tral island which cambodia has always reclaim since independence from france up to now and will go on forever, koh tral island is so much closer to cambodia than it is to mainland vietnam. how you argue with that? why vietnam controlling it and tell the world that it is phu quoc or vietnamese island or whatever. to cambodia it is called koh tral and is always reclaimed by cambodia and its khmer people. how you argue with that? how can they blame china? how can they blame cambodia for reclaiming koh tral?

---------------
Vietnam withdrew from Cambodia in 1989. The border treaty was signed in 2005 right? It was not signed under any occupation.

June 19, 2014 at 1:05 PM. Drushit is that all you got now?

The only time you tell the truth is when you say nothing at all.

The only time when you know you have no comeback to counter an argument is when you talk with one line such as the above post.

The only time when we know you are talking shit and have no comeback is when you troll about random crap unrelated to the article.

Drushit, do you have any counter arugment to the article? Give us a good one, we want to know if you truely have read 1000 books and can truely give counter points in a civilised manner without the mannerisim of an attack dog bragging.

1. Fact: Vietnam withdrew from Cambodia in 1989.
2. Fact: The border treaty was signed in 2005.
3. Conclusion: The treaty was not signed under any occupation.
Did I have any fact or conclusion wrong?

Drushit. You are not as smart as you think you are. Even your response is weaker than a child's play.

Your fact 1,2,3 is a fiction,

1. Vietnam invaded Cambodia and killed thousands of Khmer during the occupation of Cambodia creating another genocide after installing Pol Pot to power pre 1975.
2. Under the Vietnamese occupation and after the invasion, many Vietnamese stayed back in Cambodia and many Vietnamese continued to advised many of the Khmer Rouge commanders, eg installing Hun Sen and removing Pen Sovann from history.
3. Not only did the Vietnamese forced Cambodia to sign many land treaties conceding the land and sea area after the Vietnamese occupation, but since 1989 -2005, many more treaties were signed since

Have you got anything else to counter my argument?

Stupid Drgunzet

In 2014, Cambodia is still under Yuon occupation.
And even when Hun Sen dies, Hanoi will put up another Hun Sen.

The solution once and for all is to stop the Hanoi Hun Sen maker.
